Chairboys strike

-

WHILE Plymouth Argyle were reaching the top of League One, Wycombe Wanderers went second on a day when only four games were played in the division.

The Chairboys breezed past Gillingham 2-0, scoring both goals in the first seven minutes.

Garath Mccleary scored after two minutes, getting on the end of Sam Vokes’ flick before beating defender Max Ehmer and firing his shot in at the near post.

It was soon two when Curtis Thompson’s shot ricocheted into the path of Brandon Hanlan, who finished under Gills goalkeeper Jamie Cumming.

Vadaine Oliver missed a first-half penalty for Gillingham, who now sit only two points above the bottom four.

Wycombe are a point ahead of third-placed Wigan Athletic and Sunderland, having played a game more.

Lee Gregory’s second-half winner gave Sheffield Wednesday a 1-0 victory over Bolton Wanderers.

The former Derby County loanee finished off Jack Hunt’s low cross at Hillsborough to leave the Owls a point adrift of the top six.

Ipswich Town secure a 2-1 home win over Shrewsbury Town.

Conor Chaplin’s 23rd-minute opener put the hosts ahead only for Shaun Whalley’s fine 20-yard drive to level five minutes later.

Ipswich restored their lead to win it after 54 minutes when QPR loanee Macauley Bonne headed in his eighth goal in seven games.

There was a scare for Shrewsbury striker Ryan Bowman, who was taken to hospital with heart palpitations after coming off 10 minutes before half-time.

Bowman was kept in overnight for tests on a “sky high” heart rate and said on Twitter yesterday that he was feeling better but also awaiting further tests.
