1921: Czech-born tennis player Jaroslav Drobny was born. The 1954 Wimbledon winner also won a medal at the 1948 Winter Olympics, in ice hockey.
1991: Chip Beck equalled the US PGA Tour record for 18 holes, set by Al Geiberger 14 years earlier, by shooting a 59 in the third round of the Las Vegas Invitational.
1999: UEFA announced Portugal had won the right to host Euro 2004, beating confident favourites Spain and a joint bid from Austria and Hungary.
2005: The Republic of Ireland missed out on a World Cup place after a goalless draw at home to Switzerland in a match they had to win to reach a play-off.
2007: Inzamam-ul-haq was dismissed for three in his final Test innings to fall three shy of equalling Javed Miandad’s all-time Test aggregate for runs for Pakistan.
2010: England’s Tom Daley and Max Brick won a diving gold medal in the men’s 10-metre synchro at the Commonwealth Games.
2011: Manchester City said Carlos Tevez would face disciplinary proceedings over alleged breaches of contract in relation to his conduct during the club’s Champions League tie against Bayern Munich, when he allegedly refused to come on as a substitute.
2017: Gordon Strachan left his position as Scotland head coach after a 2-2 draw in Slovenia four days earlier had ended their hopes of World Cup qualification.
2018: Former multiple Olympic sprint champion Usain Bolt scored twice as Central Coast Mariners won 4-0 against Macarthur South West United in a friendly.
2019: Eliud Kipchoge became the first marathon runner to break the two-hour barrier, recording a time of 1 hour 59 minutes and 40 seconds in Vienna.
