Last orders for town’s catalogue store
A MAJOR Swadlincote store is set to close down – but a new branch will open in a nearby supermarket.
The Argos branch at the Hepworth Retail Park is set to close its doors for the final time.
However, work is already under way to open a new Argos store in the town’s Sainsbury’s superstore, in Civic Way, as has happened in other towns where there were stand alone Argos stores.
It is being built near the clothing section, which sells Sainsbury’s’ Tu brand on the first floor of the
supermarket. Argos bosses say workers affected by the closure will be offered the chance to take on other roles within the business.
A spokeswoman for Sainsbury’s said: “Next month, a brand new Argos store will open inside Sainsbury’s Swadlincote.
“By bringing together the muchloved brands of Sainsbury’s and Argos under the one roof, our customers will be able to enjoy greater convenience as the new Argos will enable them to purchase thousands of technology, home and toy products whilst picking up their groceries.
“To make shopping convenient for customers and to enable us to invest where it matters most to customers we are relocating many of our Argos standalone stores to Sainsbury’s.
“This includes our Argos Swadlincote Retail Park store. We understand this will be an unsettling time for those affected and colleagues will be offered the opportunity to redeploy to other roles within Sainsbury’s.”
There is already an Argos collection point at Sainsbury’s in Swadlincote, which is located near the store entrance.
Last year, Sainsbury’s shared its plans to open 350 more Argos stores and collection points in its supermarkets and convenience stores across the country by March 2024. By this time, the number of stand-alone Argos stores is set to have reduced to around 100 with around 420 branches expected to have closed.
An exact date has not been announced for the closure.
