AN animal shelter in Burton which almost saw vital funds dry up during lockdown is looking forward to staging its first fundraiser in more than a year.

The RSPCA shelter in Burton had been struggling with funds and calculated it had lost £15,000 due to fundraising events such as summer fairs and car boot sales being cancelled alone during the summer last year.

The shelter, in Hillfield Lane, Stretton costs nearly £5,000 a week to run and was unable to fully open due to the covid lockdown.

Its charity shops on High Street in Swadlincote and Station Street in Burton also had to close last year during the lockdowns.

The charity has rehomed more than 600 unwanted, neglected and abandoned pets in the past 12 months, with the kennels and cattery remaining open by appointment only to comply with social distancing rules.

Now, the shelter will be running a fundraising fair to raise vital funds on Sunday, October 24, from noon to 4pm.

The fair will include a tombola, stalls, a dog show and a virtual cat and rabbit competition.

There will also be a raffle for a chance to win prizes such as a break in the Peak District, experience days and pub vouchers.

Branch trustee Arthur Ashton said: “It’s been a challenging 19 months for us as a charity but our animal welfare work in the local area has continued unabated.

“After such a long time, we’re really looking forward to holding our first big fundraiser.

“We’re so grateful to the many individuals and businesses who are helping us to put on this event and who have continued to support the animal home throughout the pandemic.”

Entry costs £1 and can be bought either on the door or booked online.
