1969: Liverpool v West Ham United was the first football match shown in colour on BBC’S Match of the Day programme. Liverpool won 2-0.
1989: Nigel Martyn became the first £1m goalkeeper when he moved from Bristol Rovers to Crystal Palace. He was sold to Leeds United in 1996 for £2.25m and won international honours with England. He was forced to retire through injury in June 2006 while at Everton.
2004: London Olympic chiefs submitted the city’s bid to host the 2012 Games. In July 2005, the International Olympic Committee awarded the Games to London.
2005: Wigan Warriors assistant coach Denis Betts resigned, bringing to an end a 19-year association with the club.
2006: Mike Newell kept his job as Luton Town manager but was severely reprimanded by the club after his high-profile verbal attack on female officials and chairman Bill Tomlins. Newell was sacked four months later with the club struggling near the foot of the Championship.
2016: Steven Gerrard left LA Galaxy after his 18-month deal with the Major League Soccer side ended.
2017: Italy sacked manager Giampiero Ventura two days after the four-time world champions failed to qualify for the World Cup finals for the first time since 1958. 2018: Derby County manager Wayne Rooney came off the bench for the last 32 minutes of his 120th and final international appearance as England beat the United States 3-0 at Wembley. 2018: Premier League clubs agreed “in principle” to the introduction of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology from the 2019-20 season.
2020: Lewis Hamilton clinched his fourth-straight and recordequalling seventh Formula One world drivers championship by winning the Turkish Grand Prix.
