Defence tweak is helping the Albion women

-

A DEFENSIVE switch has benefited Burton Albion Women as they have climbed out of the FAWNL Division One Midlands relegation zone, says goalkeeper Alice Langstone.

The Brewers beat Bedworth United 3-1 to do that last week and it followed their 2-1 win against Holwell Sports.

They were due in County Cup action against Sutton United Ladies on Sunday but that game was postponed.

Against Bedworth, Langstone saved a penalty from Sophie Wilson but could only watch as Wilson tucked away the rebound.

But Albion bounced back with Millie Wortley scoring twice and Ella Richie adding a late third.

Langstone was pleased with how the team had responded to going behind.

“Sometimes we can start games a bit nervy but then once we sort of find our feet we make a building block,” she said.

“I think we just settled into that game and made it into our own really.”

She believes climbing out of the relegation zone, after a difficult run of games, will give the squad a much-needed boost.

“I think it’s really good for morale going into a winter break to get two wins back-to-back and two that weren’t easy either,” said Langstone.

“We had to really fight for that last weekend and I think it’s just shown great character from all the girls.”

The tactical switch has seen the Brewers return to a 4-4-2 set-up after they had leaked goals.

“Since we’ve switched it to the two banks of four it’s made it a lot easier,” said Langstone.

“It allows the girls at the back to pick up their players and focus on the attackers without having too much to do.

“Then, that’s sort of freed me up more as a fifth defender, which I think has been working really well.”
