New Ipswich boss off to a winning start

-

JAMES Norwood scored the only goal of the game as Kieran Mckenna’s tenure in charge of Ipswich Town got off to a winning start with a 1-0 League One win over Wycombe Wanderers.

Norwood struck just before halftime and the Tractor Boys were able to hold on to the lead to claim all three points against a Wycombe side without manager Gareth Ainsworth, who had tested positive for Covid-19.

“It gives everyone in the group a boost and, hopefully, gives us a good base from which to build going forward,” said Mckenna, who left his role as Manchester United first-team coach to replace the axed Paul Cook.

“We did the grisly bits of the game well. Wycombe made it a tough game the way they play and we had to defend our box well.

“To get a clean sheet from this type of game is another boost and I was pleased with the way we controlled the game early on.

“The most pleasing thing was the resilience, character and spirit of the team.”

Luke Murphy’s second-half strike ensured Crewe Alexandra head into their match against Burton Albion on Saturday on the back of a 2-1 win away to fellow strugglers Morecambe.

Murphy volleyed past the goalkeeper in the 59th minute to give the away side a victory that lifted them off the bottom of the table.

Greg Leigh had headed past Dave Richards to give Morecambe the lead in the first half, but Chris Porter also scored with a header to level the scores after the break.

Oxford United beat AFC Wimbledon 3-0 to move above Wycombe into fifth.

Mark Sykes opened the scoring in the 27th minute and Matty Taylor doubled Oxford’s lead before the break.

On the hour mark, Sam Long volleyed into the back of the net to secure all three points for the home side.

Shrewsbury Town and Accrington Stanley played out a goalless draw at Montgomery Waters Meadow.
