Kane felt pace after scoring best-yet goal

-

KANE Hemmings scored what he thinks was probably the best goal of his career against Crewe Alexandra – but admitted Burton Albion’s three-week lay-off had left him feeling tired by the end of the game.

Hemmings, best known for his close-range finishes, lashed a 20-yard volley over Crewe keeper Dave Richards to put the Brewers 3-1 up in the first half and they went on to win 4-1.

Asked if it was the best he has scored, he said: “Probably, yes. I can’t think of many better.

“It sat up nicely for me. I could hear Charlie Lakin shouting in my ear but I thought ‘there’s no way I’m passing this’ and I just whacked it and it went in.”

Hemmings had a series of other chances which went begging.

“There were about five I should have scored and I’m a bit disappointed about that but we’ve won 4-1 and it was a good performance,” he said.

“If we keep creating that many chances, hopefully I’ll put some more away.”

The win made it three in succession at home in League One for Burton, during which they have scored 10 goals and conceded one, although the recent Covid-related postponements mean those wins have been spread over five weeks.

“It’s important that we keep our good home form. We’ve had some good results here in the League recently, although Port Vale (in the FA Cup) was a blip,” said Hemmings.

“It’s not been easy over the past few weeks. We’ve not known whether we’re coming or going a bit with the games being called off.

“But we’ve stayed ready and put in a good performance on our return.

“To be honest, I didn’t feel great. I felt a bit leggy but that’s to be expected really.

“It’s tough to come back and play 90 minutes on the back of being off for a while.

“Hopefully, by next week we’ll have got a bit more sharpness back into our legs.”
