Cold snap brings threat of snow showers, says Met Office

-

FORECASTERS have issued multiple weather warnings for snow as this week’s cold snap looks set to ramp up a gear.

The Met Office is predicting that snow showers could appear in the region, and have issued a yellow snow warning for today.

This warning covers large parts of Derbyshire’s Peak District and is set to last from 10am to 4pm.

Meteorologists have also issued a joint snow and ice warning for a larger area tomorrow.

This second warning includes the Peak District, as well as Ashbourne, and is set to last from 8pm today until 11am on Friday.

After a few days of sub-zero temperatures and hard frosts, today looks set to see further snow arriving from the west.

The Met Office is urging people to take care on the roads and says some roads on higher routes in the Peak District could be impacted by the weather.

This feature will make its way to us after passing over Ireland and should be ready to touch down by the late morning, and the bitterly cold start to the day will mean it could start arriving as snow for some areas.

In Staffordshire, this band of precipitation should turn from snow to rain through the early afternoon and into the evening, which would mean any lying snow that has settled will soon be washed away.

But that is not the end of the story.

Another feature may arrive overnight on Friday, potentially reaching the area by the early hours, and this looks set to deliver a stronger dose of snow, which could settle in most areas. Showers could be quite isolated in nature, but the Derbyshire/ Staffordshire border and parts of the Peak District appear to stand the best chance.

The colder weather is likely to last into the weekend, but not to the same extent it has been this week, with less risk of frost and slightly milder daytime temperatures, feeling closer to the January average.

Unfortunately, Saturday looks to be fairly wet and breezy, with Sunday looking dry and fine.
