Plenty of things to look forward to in 2022

- Kate Griffiths MP for Burton

IKNOW many of us are looking forward to 2022 being a more positive year than the last couple we have experienced with the coronavirus pandemic. Over the Christmas period, the lightningspeed of the booster programme and the data showing the Omicron variant likely to be less severe than previous strains, has given many of us reason to be cautiously optimistic for the months ahead.

Although we must continue to be cautious and follow the latest public health guidance, there is a lot to be excited for in 2022. Firstly, on February 6, Her Majesty the Queen will become the first British monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, marking 70 years on the throne and public service.

To celebrate, the Government has announced a four-day bank holiday weekend (Thursday, June 2, to Sunday, June 5) and Buckingham Palace recently revealed a series of majestic public events to mark the special occasion. This includes the Platinum

Pudding competition with judges such as Dame Mary Berry on the hunt for the perfect new pudding recipe, dedicated to the Queen and fit for a royal celebration.

The weekend itself will see a special Trooping the Colour, the Platinum Party at the palace and the Big Jubilee Lunch, where local communities are being encouraged to put on street parties and get together to share in the celebrations. I am looking forward to seeing all the bunting up around Burton and Uttoxeter as people butter the cucumber sandwiches and light local beacons!

Later this summer, we also have the sporting event of the year, taking place just down the road from us in Birmingham, the 2022 Commonwealth Games. This will put the eyes of the world on our region and be a showcase for some of the best athletics on the planet!

The organisers are currently looking for 2,022 baton bearers for the Queen’s Baton Relay which will travel across England having already made its way around the Commonwealth countries. The Birmingham team are asking for nominations of individuals, each with inspiring stories or dedication to their local community, to possibly take part. If you know a local community champion or someone who is an inspiration to others, visit the website below and make a nomination.
