Woman bought a bag of dead chicks to feed to her pet reptiles but 10 were still ALIVE

SHE TOOK THEM TO AN ANIMAL RESCUE CENTRE, WHICH IS APPEALING FOR HOMES

A WOMAN who bought a bag of dead chicks to feed her reptiles was horrified to find 10 of them still alive.

She was stunned when she opened the bag to find some of the day-old chicks moving. Newly born chicks can be bought dead to be fed to reptiles, such as snakes. The chicks are often gassed with carbon dioxide to kill them.

And the exotic animal owner had purchased what she believed were dead chicks to feed to her pets but some of the birds were actually alive, though very cold.

Two died shortly after they were discovered but the shocked woman got the remaining eight to Etwall-based Linjoy Wildlife Sanctuary and Rescue.

A spokesperson for the rescue centre said: “Sadly male chicks are a by-product of the egg industry with most of them ending up as animal food.

“These chicks had survived being gassed with carbon dioxide and then been thrown into bags with the dead and sold as animal feed. This should never have happened.

“God knows how many were alive prior to being bagged and boxed up.

“These boys will be reared by ourselves and will eventually be looking for homes. If you can offer one or two a home when they are older, please get in touch.

“We are hoping they have no lasting effects from the exposure to the gas but for now they seem to be doing well and have started to drink water and peck at food when shown how to pick it up.

“These boys truly are lucky and it’s a miracle they have survived.”
