Hopes of eyesore becoming homes
SCAFFOLDING UP AT OLD PRINTERS’ WORKSHOP
A “DILAPIDATED” eyesore in Burton town centre could finally be set to be transformed.
70 Guild Street was built in the mid 1900s as a printers’ workshop but has since stood empty for many years, leading to its decaying state.
The building is close to St Mary and St Modwen Church. Scaffolding has recently been erected there after plans to convert the premises into seven two-bedroom flats were submitted to East Staffordshire Borough Council.
Dealmead Ltd has submitted the proposals, which are yet to be decided by the council. A report to the authority submitted alongside the application described the site as empty adding that most of the industrial units at the rear were “dilapidated”.
It comes after an application to turn the building into nine flats was approved in 2006 but work never started. The report added: “It has been decided to modernise the internal court elevation by introducing contemporary style window casements timber boarding and canopies above front doors. Due to the condition of the brickwork, it is proposed that the elevations fronting Guild Street will be rendered and the external rear will remain the same.
“The proposed scheme will provide seven residential units. Each will have one or two bedrooms, ideal for young couples with a child or working professionals.
“The structure at the rear of the site will be demolished to create amenity areas and parking spaces for the future inhabitants and will also provide storage for bins and bikes.”
The plans will increase the parking at the site from three to seven spaces. A decision is due in the next few months.
