Handsaker targets fastest man title as he gets 60m record

HARRY Handsaker aims to become Burton Athletic Club’s all-time fastest man this summer.

He took over as the club 60m record holder at the Sale indoor meet in Manchester when he ran his heat in 7.22 seconds to beat Jono Hornblow’s 2007 time.

He is second in the club’s list over 100m and will target that record in the summer.

Katie Brant added another under17 60m hurdles win to her indoor season tally in clocking 9.01 seconds at Manchester and followed up with 8.26 seconds in the 60m sprint.

Also at 60m, Aaron Traves clocked 7.45 seconds in his senior race and debutant Nathan Mugoti ran a personal best of 7.95 at under-15, before adding a long jump PB of 5.41m.

Brant’s time qualified her for English Indoor Championsh­ips at Sheffield in February, while Handsaker and Traves are targeting the British University Championsh­ips, also in Sheffield.

BURTON AC sent 21 runners to the Staffordsh­ire Cross Country Championsh­ips at Betley and had nine more in action at the Derbyshire championsh­ips, run in tandem with the Nottingham­shire championsh­ips at Berry Hill Park, Mansfield.

Apart from individual and team medals, runners were aiming for top eight finishes which will see them selected to represent their counties at the inter-counties championsh­ips.

At Betley, the club’s strongest age group team, the under-15 girls, took team silver behind Wolverhamp­ton & Bilston, while Caitlin Mccarney edged out Saffron Bowley to take individual bronze, with Martha Wong eighth and Libby Joyce 11th. For the under-15 boys, Kamil Kolodziej was 12th and Rhys Morgan 14th.

The under-17 boys took team bronze, with Owen Morgan eighth, Jamal Webb ninth and Jack Dennis 12th.

For the under-17 girls, Paige Barker landed her second county selection with sixth place, Cara Mccarney came 10th and Megan Smith 18th.

The race for age 20 and upwards saw Callum Abberley come 20th among the seniors and Jack Shorten 11th at under-20.

Jonah Hearn was 11th in the under-13 boys, Aleksander Tutt

13th, Sammy Mccafferty 17th, Daniel Kolodziej 22nd and Callum Morgan 27th. They just missed out on a team medal. Jessica Golder was the sole Burton under-13 girl and came 17th.

At Mansfield,

Lily Burton, in her first year in the under-13 age group, ran well for sixth, while Lewis Boyce was 11th for the boys.

Matt Orford, in his first race for Burton, was 11th in the senior men’s race.

The combined under-17 and under-20 women’s race saw Maisie Trueman take individual bronze and land her third county selection for Derbyshire. Lauren Ford was seventh at under-20.

Amelie Brown led the under-15 girls home in seventh and Connie Lees ran strongly for eighth. Imogen Barker was 12th and the took team gold.

Joel Cantrill ran well for ninth in the under-15 boys.
