Student intern Alex has done so well at café that they’ve offered him a job

-

A STUDENT serving an internship at a town bakery and café has won plaudits for his progress from both his employer and customers.

Alex Baker, a Foundation Learning student from Burton and South Derbyshire College (BSDC), has received glowing reviews during his supported internship at the Summerhouse Bakery, based in Burton Market Hall.

Alex decided to undertake a supported internship after completing an Advance to Vocational Study course at the college, which prepares students for gaining a job and helps them to develop skills for independent living.

A supported internship is a structured programme of study undertaken by a young person aged 16-24 with learning difficulties or disabilities who has a real desire to work. It is a job specially adapted to meet the skills and ability of an individual while fulfilling a genuine business need for the employer.

The supported internship programme combines unpaid work with an employer and time in college to gain other skills such as maths, English, ICT, Health and Safety and job search skills.

Alex has been undertaking a range of duties in his role, from preparing food in the kitchen to serving customers. He has become part of the team and has even been offered a job at the end of the supported internship.

Alex commented: “I did a

Pathways course at the college and it helped me to improve my communication and English skills. My tutor encouraged me to go on to a supported internship.

“When I started, I was nervous but as the weeks went on I got used to everything. It’s good to have the chance to work somewhere and I’m really enjoying it. I never miss a day and I do my best to help.”

Tracey Heap, owner of Summerhouse Bakery, added: “We have worked with the college taking on work experience and apprenticeships for the last few years, so a supported internship was just a natural progression from that.

“Alex started in the kitchen doing basic cooking and now he has gone on to develop his skills serving customers and using the till. He’s learnt new skills and his self-esteem has increased massively; he’s part of the team now.

“We have enjoyed taking on a supported internship learner and Alex has received tremendous feedback from customers. I would encourage local businesses to get involved with supported internships – if you’ve got the ability to help someone and make a difference then you should definitely do it.”
