THE site of an arson-hit former golf club in Burton could still be turned into a holiday complex – but plans have now been scaled down significantly.

The Craythorne Golf Club, in Craythorne Road, Stretton, shut down in 2013, and was destroyed in an arson attack the following year.

An application to build 40 holiday chalets there was entered last year. However, a new application has gone from Juniper Properties that halves that number to 20.

The council report says Juniper Properties withdrew its initial application following discussions with East Staffordshire Borough Council.

The new report submitted following the updated application said: “The development will create up to 20 holiday chalets with associated public open space, which provides a new rural tourism business to meet the needs of the area, whilst respecting and enhancing the site’s environmental and cultural assets. It will also promote the use of sustainable transport and plug into the existing public right of way network.

“The chalet will be set within principally a brownfield site and existing hotel complex, which will include the existing mature trees and hedgerows but also planting and landscaping the site. This will help to integrate development within the landscape and create a distinctive sense of place.

“The objective of the development is to create a desirable place for people to visit, which is safe and secure, is fundamental. This will be achieved by the way the development is laid out and by the street, block and plot design delivering a good quality, safe and attractive place for tourists.”

The report continued that the chalets would fit with the “local character” of the surroundings areas. The borough council also stated it will approve applications for development which respond positively to the context of the area surrounding the site of the application and in themselves exhibit a high quality of design which corresponds to or enhances surrounding development.

The report states: “Local character comprises of a variety of design elements, from the way in which streets interconnect, development blocks and buildings are arranged, the use of common building materials, visual containment and boundary treatments. The site does not specifically seek to recreate, or generate what has gone before, but instead to look forward to contemporary sustainable design solutions which effectively integrate into the existing fabric of Stretton by way of referencing common building materials, layout and street hierarchy.”

The former Craythorne Golf Club is located between Stretton and Rolleston on Dove on the western side of Craythorne Road. The site comprises a large carpark and foundations of the former golf club building.
