Officers commended for lifesaving actions
THREE cool-headed police officers who helped to save the life of a man who had tried to electrocute himself have been commended for their actions.
PCSOS Finn Greville, Claire Robbins and David Marley, from Mercia police safer neighbourhood team (SNT), have been awarded commendations from Derbyshire police for that and, in the case of officers Grenville and Marley, other heroic acts.
In July 2021 the officers were called to an address in South Derbyshire to check on a vulnerable man.
When they got there, he had collapsed. The trio carried out first aid and called an ambulance. It was later discovered the man had taken an overdose of paracetamol and tried to electrocute himself.
As a result of the team’s swift help, the patient’s life was saved. Divisional Commander Chief Superintendent David Cox praised the officers, saying: “Your compassion and professionalism in this incident were exemplary.”
PCSO Greville, and PCSO Marley were also commended for their actions when they helped a woman found slumped in a vehicle and who was in and out of consciousness, also in July 2021. They officers administered first aid but she was unresponsive and CPR was started. As a result she came round. The woman had taken an overdose but as a result of the officers’ actions she survived.
The same duo were commended for their “bravery and professionalism” following a head-on crash in Etwall in April 2021. PCSO Marley came across the incident while offduty. It involved a drink-driver.
He prevented the motorist from driving away by taking the keys from their van. Members of the public attempted to assault the man at the time but the officer took control of the situation, said a police spokesman. The commendation reads: “Despite not knowing whether the man (who was covered in blood) was contagious with Covid, you managed to keep him calm until units arrived to apprehend him.”
PCSO Greville then selflessly drove to the scene to assist, despite having already booked off duty. As the location of the incident was in a rural area in complete darkness, he then took charge of traffic management, closing the road and preventing the heightened risk of further crashes and injuries to members of the public at the scene. The driver was convicted and sent to prison.
PCSOS Jamie Gutberlet and Reece Beattie, from Swadlincote police SNT were commended for their work throughout 2020 and 2021.
Swadlincote SNT’S Sergeant Tarj Nizzer praised officers for their actions and awards, saying: “I am very proud of my team. They are all a credit to Derbyshire Constabulary.”
