PLANS to bring a major restaurant and fast food chain to Burton have taken a step forward.

The former Frankie & Benny’s building in Burton will be reopened as Tim Hortons moves in – creating 50 new jobs.

The restaurant chain is a coffee and bake house and has now been given permission to move into the Middleway Park premises, off Guild Street, next to Burton’s cinema in the town centre.

The current building will be bulldozed to make way for a new Hortons drive-thru lane associated with the Canadian-based business.

The development will create 50 new jobs and will see the vacant site in Burton regenerated, a report to council planning chiefs has said.

Tim Hortons will also alter the car park at the venue to create a drivethru lane, which will see the loss of some existing trees along the western boundary of the site, which is near Guild Street.

A small part of the existing building and the next door external store in the south-eastern corner of the site will be demolished to accommodate the drive-thru lane.

This will result in a 26sq metre reduction in the floor area of the building, a planning report says.

The coffee shop and restaurant chain will sell food and drink for consumption on and off the premises.

This is why the business has had to apply for a change of use applicaleek. tion, even through Frankie & Benny’s was also a restaurant.

Tim Hortons was founded in 1964 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, and has more than 4,500 stores from coast to coast.

Hortons is a relatively new entrant to the UK market, opening its first in 2017. The nearest restaurant is in Leicester. The chain is hoping to open one in Derby, and there is speculation one could be opened in

It now has 29 units across the UK and its current focus is to expand its drive-thru model.

The chain says it is different to the likes of fellow fast-food restaurants like Mcdonald’s, KFC and Burger King and is comparable to coffee shop operators such as Costa or Starbucks, with a substantial part of the offer comprising hot and cold drinks and bakery goods, including an extensive choice of donuts.

The hot food offering does include paninis and “melts”. as well as hot sandwiches and wraps.

Since it closed, the old Frankie & Benny’s premises been boarded up. There were issues with broken glass around the outlet.
