FOOD HYGIENE INSPECTORS WERE NOT IMPRESSED

AN off-licence and supermarket has been given the second worst food hygiene rating after a visit from council inspectors.

They recorded concerns after finding a packet of out of date Pepperoni meat, and there was no hot water for the wash basin in the toilet at Premier on Stanton Road, in Burton, during their visit on April 4.

The inspection, carried out by officers from East Staffordshire Borough Council, found the packet of meat was being stocked past its useby date. The premises’ management system was also criticised, as there was no documented food safety system. The shop received the secondworst rating premises can receive – a one out of five.

The lowest rating a place can get is zero and the best is five. Shops selling food, restaurants and cafes are all inspected by the council. The Stapenhill supermarket has told the Mail that all the issues raised in the inspectors’ report have now been addressed.

The report said: “A packet of Pepperoni was found displayed for sale beyond its use by date. You must ensure that all out-of-date foods are removed from sale on a daily basis.

“The boiler was not switched on and, as a result, there was no hot water available for use at the wash hand basin in the toilet. Ensure that a constant supply of hot water is available for use at the basin during business hours.”

In the report, the waste disposal was also criticised as a lot of containers were “overflowing”. The report said: “Both of your trade refuse containers were overflowing with waste, and cardboard had accumulated in the rear yard area. You must increase your frequency of waste collection or have an extra bin available for use to avoid the attraction of pests.”

Inspectors noted that the proper food safety paperwork was not in place. The report said: “At the time of inspection you did not have a documented food safety system. You have not documented how you identify control and monitor all steps and activities of your food business that are needed to make certain that food is safe. Food Hygiene Regulations state that you must write down simple details of what you do to make sure that the food produced or sold at your premises is safe to eat. In order to meet this requirement I would suggest you obtain and complete a copy of the Food Standards Agency’s ‘Safer Food Better Business’ pack for retailers.”

Management at the supermarket said all the points highlighted in the report have been addressed. A spokesperson from the Stapenhill supermarket said: “Everything has been addressed. The boiler has been addressed; we don’t turn it on when it’s not business hours.

“The food item has been thrown away and the inspector said they had no reason to think that we would do anything that would be a detriment to the public. We showed him it was ready to be taken off the shelf immediately. Everything has been addressed. We have sorted everything.”
