Shop given poor hygiene rating after inspection
OWNER SAYS ISSUES SUCH AS ‘FILTHY’ TOILET NOW FIXED
A BURTON convenience store that had a “filthy” staff toilet and handwashing basin was given a one-star food hygiene rating after a visit from an inspector.
Raja Brothers, in Wellington Street, was visited by East Staffordshire Borough Council staff as part of the Rate My Place inspections.
The inspector noted that the hygienic handling of food including preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage was “very good” but it was the structure and cleaning at the shop where there were issues.
Owner Waseem Sajid told the Mail that since the inspection they had been visited again around two weeks ago, and were awarded the maximum five stars. She said all of the issues that had been pointed out had been fixed.
The store was visited on April 5, with the report viewed by the Burton Mail after a Freedom of Information request. It said the inspector reported there was no hot water available at the wash hand basin as the boiler was turned off at the time of the visit. The basin was in a “very dirty condition” and the staff toilet was in a “filthy condition”. This needed to be rectified immediately, the report said.
Damage, dirt and cobwebs were found in the back store room, and the shelving in the drinks store room was also dirty.
The inspector said a number of the ceiling panels were either missing or badly damp-stained, and the door seal to the milk fridge was split. It ended: “Although you had some temperature records for your cold storage, these were not up to date. You had also still not got a documented food safety management system in place, which was required following the previous inspection in 2020.”
