Could you give dogs a loving new home?

- By SAMUEL HODGKISS samuel.hodgkiss@reachplc.com TERRIER CROSS:

WITH summer well and truly here, many people will be out and about enjoying walking their four-legged friends in East Staffordshire. However, there are still some dogs that have ended up at adoption shelters.

There are lots of pooches desperate for new homes and there is a real mix of dogs available, from cross breeds to the ever popular Staffordshire bull terrier. They are all different ages, but they have all got the same hopes - to win your heart.

Here are some of the dogs looking for new homes from the RSPCA Burton and District Branch in Hillfield Lane, Stretton. Adoption will depend on vets’ checks for some of these, so make sure you check with the shelters.

ANDY - CROSS-BREED:

Meet Andy, an 11-month old crossbreed who came into shelter due to a relationship break-up. A spokesperson for the shelter said: “He has a very loving character but also has a lot of energy.

“Andy loves to play with his toys, go out on walks and also enjoys a good run around in our compound. He needs a lot of mental stimulation to keep his brain active and occupied. Due to his age, he can become excitable at times and will mouth and jump up. We have been working beside a behaviourist to try and meet Andy’s needs and it has gone really well.”

BRIAN - STAFFORDSHIRE BULL TERRIER:

Brian is one and has been at the shelter since the start of May. He came into the place as a stray and is now looking for a forever home. A spokesperson for the shelter said: “He is looking for an active family with teenage children who have the time and patience to help him settle into a new environment. Ideally you will have some knowledge of the two breeds.

“He will need to be rehomed as the only dog at this moment in time as he will need to continue with training, socialising and general obedience due to him being a young dog. You will need to have the time to visit Brian at least three times to build up a bond.”

NALA - LURCHER:

Nala is a six-year-old lurcher who ended up at the shelter due to unforeseen circumstances. A spokesperson there said: “She is a little nervous until she gains her confidence and trust in people.

“Being the breed that she is, she is fast when she wants to be and she can have a high prey drive at times. She enjoys long walks and a good bomb round in our off-lead compound.” Ideally Nala needs an owner that has some experience in lurchers.

She will need an active family home with teenage children preferably, but once Nala has built a bond she is a very sweet and loving girl.”

OTIS - RUSSIAN

Otis is a gentle black Russian terrier cross who is looking for a calm, patient and loving owner that is willing to carry on with his training programme. A spokesperson said: “He will need to be rehomed as the only dog as he is nervous around them.

“This is because he hasn’t been socialised enough or continuously trained from a very young age.

WAS he has grown up this has caused him a lot of anxiety around other dogs.

BELLA - CROSS BREED:

Bella is a Staffordshire bull terrier who is looking for an active, calm and patient owner. She came into the shelter via an inspector due to being in a multi dog household.

The shelter said: “Ideally you will have another dog, preferably a calm male or female dog, who can help Bella feel at home.

She would really benefit from further training/socialising to help build her confidence as she is anxious on a lead out in public areas.”
