Burton youngsters head for top-class schools showdown

NINE Burton AC athletes have been selected to represent their county at the English Schools Championsh­ips next month.

The club were represente­d by 20 athletes at the Schools Inter-counties Championsh­ip, competing for the Mason Trophy at Northwood Stadium in Stoke.

Katie Brant ran a personal best of 11.43 seconds in the 80m hurdles, smashing the club record, to take gold and secure her place in the Staffordsh­ire team for the English Schools Championsh­ips.

She is now ranked third in the UK in her first year of competing at under-17.

Brant then went on to be part of the Staffordsh­ire silver medal 4x100m relay team.

Kaiden Ramsay won gold in the long jump, was fourth in his heat for the 100m and helped claim gold for Derbyshire in the 4x100m relay. He will represent Derbyshire in the long jump at the English Schools.

In the 3000m, Maisie Trueman started steadily in ninth place before moving up to fifth at halfway.

Picking up speed over the last kilometre, she moved into third and finished in 10.18.02.

This smashed the PB she had set the previous week by 23 seconds and put her 31st in the rankings, giving her a new under-17 club record and an English schools entry time, securing her place in the Derbyshire team.

Izzy Fellows took silver in the javelin and will represent Derbyshire in the event at the English Schools, while also finishing fifth in the discus.

Joel Cantrill won his 300m race in 38.5, taking a second off his PB, and was third overall when the three races were consolidat­ed. He is now 25th in the rankings and has a place in the Derbyshire team for the English Schools.

Junior girl Isabelle Gould won bronze in the hammer and will represent Derbyshire, while Maddie Hughes won gold in the hammer for Leicesters­hire at her county event and has also qualified for the national event.

Isla Swindlehur­st came fifth overall in the 100m and second in her 200m heat. She has the entry standard and will represent Staffordsh­ire at the English Schools.

Lily Hill was sixth in her 100m heat, Ffion Raw fifth in the 200m heat and Rosie Tyler fifth in her 300m heat. Lily, Isla, Ffion and Rosie came fifth in the junior girls 4x100m relay.

Freya Bruno was second in her 200m heat and ran a PB.

Daniel Brackstone represente­d Derbyshire in the 100m and 200m and came fourth and sixth in his heat respective­ly.

Freddie Kuglemann won bronze in the intermedia­te boys’ 400m.

Lewis Da Rosa was fifth in the long jump, only a centimetre off his best, while Isaac Farmer jumped a PB in the triple jump.

George Kugelmann, representi­ng Staffordsh­ire, was fifth in the junior boys discus.

Martha Wong ran a strong opening lap in the 800m for fourth at the bell before coming home fifth in 2.26.24.

Sammy Mccafferty ran well for sixth in 2.22.95 in his boys’ race.

For the intermedia­te girls, Saffron Bowley finished ninth in 5.10.44 in her first year in the age group.

Paige Barker ran well in the 1500m steeplecha­se, finishing sixth in a new PB of 5.41.46, breaking her club record.

Nathan Mugoti will complete the Burton AC representa­tion at the English Schools Championsh­ips, which will be held at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester on July 8-9. He will compete for Derbyshire in the long jump.

Matthew Lear won the Cholmondel­ey 70.3 Gauntlet triathlon as part of the Castle Race Series.

He started running aged 16, joining Burton AC as a middle distance runner, and five years later this is one of his main achievemen­ts.

After the 1.2-mile swim he was third, before moving up to first after the 400m run.

He stayed in front for the remainder of the race, featuring 59 miles of cycling and a hilly half-marathon on trail, grass and some tarmac for a winning time of four hours, 33 minutes, running the 13 miles in one hour and 22 minutes.

He was nine minutes clear in first place.
