NEARLY 300 more homes are set to spring up in a massive development in Burton.

The Branston Locks development will eventually see up to 2,500 homes, shops, a care home, a pub, school and hotel, and planning permission has been granted for the next phase, which involves building 284 new houses.

The new estate will be developed by Crest Nicholson, one of a handful of house builders working on the site, which has been given “Sustainable Urban Extension” status.

The status was allocated in the East Staffordshire Borough Council Local plan, which set aside the greenfield land for the development, and this latest phase of the huge scheme will see Crest Nicholson create a cluster of houses, linking up to the wider scheme.

The firm will start building a range of two, three, four, and five-bedroom homes, which will include 22 shared ownership properties, as well as public open space with a play area, and walking and cycling links through the development.

Crest Nicholson Midlands managing director Tim Brickley said: “We are proud to have been granted planning permission to provide high-quality housing within a development that will create a sustainable community in a great location in the Midlands area.”

After the site was earmarked for development in the council’s Local Plan, outline planning consent was given to Nurton Developments in 2015 for the erection of up to 2,500 homes, employment floor space, a local centre with retail floor space, healthcare and associated community uses, a residential care home of up to 160 bed spaces, a pub, a primary school, and a hotel of up to 80 rooms.

The Sustainable Urban Extension will also include vehicular access connections from Branston Road and Shobnall Road, green infrastructure comprising public open space, structural landscaping, sustainable urban drainage basins and associated drainage, as well as sports and recreation facilities.

Development partner at Nurton Developments Ian Willicombe said: “We welcome the opportunity to have another quality house builder on board at Branston Locks, delivering much needed new homes in Staffordshire as part of a sustainable, flagship scheme for Nurton Developments, creating a vibrant, well connected new community offering jobs and access to green open spaces and new amenities.”
