MP faces a grilling on democracy – by a group of enthusiastic schoolchildren

-

PUPILS at a school near Burton have been given a lesson in democracy – from their own MP.

The School Council from Horninglow Primary Academy spent some class time with Burton and Uttoxeter MP Kate Kniveton, discussing democracy and her role as the local Member of Parliament.

The youngsters asked Ms Kniveton a selection of questions, including what it was like to be an MP and what she enjoyed about the job.

Ms Kniveton was able to learn from the children what role the school council plays within the school, and how it meets once a month to discuss how the academy can be improved and what pupils would like to see.

The council is made up of a group of 12 pupils from across the school’s year groups.

Ms Kniveton was also given a tour of the school as part of her visit and met with principal Roz Winter and vice principal Daniel Mosinski.

Mr Mosinski is also planning to bring a group of pupils to the House of Commons in the future on a school trip, so they can see Parliament for themselves and further their understanding of British democracy.

Ms Kniveton said: “It was lovely to be able to meet with the Horninglow Primary Academy’s School Council today and to answer their questions on democracy and my role as their Member of Parliament.

“Learning about the society we live in and our democratic processes is hugely important for schoolchildren and it was great to see the pupils take such a keen interest in this subject area.

“I would like to thank the school’s principal Roz Winter for the tour and to Mr Mosinski for the invite to meet with pupils.

“I shall look forward to welcoming them to Parliament in the future on their school trip.”
