Nefyn sisters in amazing drama medal double

-

A PLAY comparing Eve’s apple to the multinational technology company, Apple, won an A level student the Urdd National Eisteddfod’s Drama Medal.

Lois Llywelyn Williams from Morfa Nefyn, near Pwllheli, was declared the winner at a special ceremony at the week-long festival which is being staged in Flint.

It was a remarkable double for the Williams family with Lois’ older sister Mared, 23, placed third in the competition.

Miriam Elin Jones from Aberystwyth was placed second.

Lois said: “It’s a play that compares how three generations cope with the modern technological world and I use the comparison of the apple Eve ate and the technology company.

“It is a play for two actors but they play three generations, young, middleaged and elderly.

“It was a surreal experience watching actors perform part of the work on the stage.

“But it was exactly as I had foreseen it when I wrote the script.”

The adjudicators, Manon Steffan Ros and lola Ynyr, felt the influence of the classic work Y Twr by Gwenlyn Parry was apparent on the winning piece and that Lois was a “master at subtly creating theatric images, challenging the audience’s senses”.

The adjudicators said: “This was the most accomplished work in the competition and it had intricate layers of meaning.

“We have here a confident voice that would offer a real challenge to two actors, leaping from one time zone to another.”

Her sister Mared was third in the same competition and it was Lois who told her sister.

“I told her she was third and that I knew because I had won the competition.

“I knew she had entered the competition but we didn’t work together or anything like that,” she added.

From the time she was a pupil at Ysgol Botwnnog Lois has been heavily involved in the theatre and literature world and her main interests are French, creative writing and the theatre.

Lois said: “It was Aled Jones Williams who encouraged me to start scripting, as he was the tutor on the O Sgript i Lwyfan project (From Script to Stage) by Cwmni’r Frân Wen.

“But I would also like to thank all the teachers that have inspired me over the years.”

Lois has won many prizes for literature at various eisteddfodau in recent years and won the Eisteddfod Powys drama medal in 2014.

She will sit her A level exams at Coleg Meirion Dwyfor next week and if successful would like to go to Oxford University to study French.

But she hopes to continue writing in future, especially plays.
