A PAIN IN THE GRASS

Gwynedd Council become butt of jokes for cutting everything but the grass!

- Amelia Shaw

A LOCAL authority just isn’t cutting it when it comes to the length of grass.

Critics have slammed Gwynedd council for neglecting its grass-cutting duties in parks, cemeteries and open spaces.

Some residents claim the vegetation is up to four feet high in some places, with many taking to social media to express their concern and disgust in an attempt to get the attention of council bosses.

One picture posted by the Facebook group Gwynedd Memes reads: “Gwynedd Council cutting everything... but the grass”.

Talysarn councillor Dilwyn Lloyd said: “I have contacted Gwynedd council three times regarding overgrown grass as it’s a health and safety matter.

“One of the mothers said that there is broken glass in the playing field where the children from the (Talysarn) pre-school play. Surely the playing field should be free of broken glass as this is a very dangerous situation for small children.

“It’s not good enough. Cuts in service is one thing but the health and safety of the public is another matter and it will cost them more in the long run.”

Tracey Williams, a mother of two from Talysarn, said: “I’m sure most parents with young children have noticed how disgracefully long the grass is in the park in both Talysarn and Nantlle.

“It’s already a risk as you can’t see what’s in the grass. We all know broken glass can and has been an issue and as it stands you can’t see if there’s any”

A Gwynedd council spokesman said: “Due to the huge cuts in funding the council receives, last autumn the authority carried out a public consultation in which over 2,000 residents and organisations had their say on a range of possible service cuts.

“Following detailed consideration of the submissions, the full council approved a programme of service cuts totalling £4.94m. This list included an option the authority reduced the frequency of grass cutting in its cemeteries, play areas and open spaces.

“Despite having less frequent grass cutting, every effort will be made to avoid any danger to the public. The recent spate of growth has necessitated bringing forward the next scheduled cut in many locations, and this work is being progressed.”
