Munro ton in vain

-

AUSTRALIAN Greg Munro’s third century in five weeks was not enough to save Pwllheli from a heartbreaking home defeat at the hands of high-flying Bangor last weekend.

Munro passed 500 league runs for the campaign, but his team remain rock bottom of the North Wales League Premier Division following an eighth loss in 11 outings.

The Llŷn side elected to bat first after winning the toss and chalked up an excellent 270-9 off their 50 overs.

Munro and Craig Edwards (37) put on 76 for the first wicket, then the Aussie added 148 with Morgan Murray-Williams (88).

Unfortunately only one other batsman made double figures, but still Pwll reached a more than impressive total.

Facing his old club, right- arm spinner Nadeem Rehman took 3-61 for Bangor, and South African Francois Mostert claimed 3-72 from 12.

Rehman then starred with 119 as the travellers made it to 272-8 with an over to spare.

David Winter (34) and Robert Marshall (33) also produced telling contributions, while Michael Hughes snapped up 3-77 for the hosts.

Bangor prevailed 11-4 on points and stay third.

Pwllheli will try again when they host Pontblyddyn this weekend. ● Caernarfon’s hopes of victory over Pwllheli seconds in the North Wales League 2nd XI West Division last Saturday were ruined by rain.

Put into bat at Coed Helen, Pwll were limited to just 80-9 off 40 overs, opener Paul Mawer posting 34, extras the next highest score on 17.

Barry Roberts led the charge for the Cofis attack, scooping an impressive 4-18 off eight overs, while Simon Davis picked up 3-24 from nine, Prysor Aled and Shamu Raza with one victim apiece.

Only three overs of Caernarfon’s reply were possible when rain caused an abandonment, the hosts having reached nine without loss.

The teams collected five points apiece.

This Saturday sees Caernarfon, who lie third, travel to face top-of-the-table Carmel & District seconds, while Pwllheli seconds could be in for a tough test away to fourthplaced Bangor seconds.
