Canaries face Salford in first warm-up clash

-

CAERNARFON Town’s first pre-season fixture this Saturday will be a glamour occasion, with Salford City the visitors to The Oval (3pm).

The ambitious National League North side are best known for being part-owned by Manchester United legends Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes.

Caernarfon manager Iwan Williams cannot wait for the game.

He said: “After getting the players back into training this week we now look forward to our first pre-season friendly against Salford City.

“Everyone is aware of the rise of Salford after their documentary was aired on ITV after the famous Class of ’92 took ownership of the club. Having contacted their jointmanager Anthony Johnson to discuss a possible friendly, his response was ‘Caernarfon’s a lovely place, let’s do it!’ and I’m thankful to him and his great club for agreeing to come down and play us.

“I know that this will be a difficult challenge for us. They’ve won back-to-back promotions and their squad is full of talent and experience.

“They have a number of players who have countless games in the Football League under their belt so we will need to work hard and keep the ball effectively if we are to compete.

“I wanted a tough fixture to kick off our pre-season programme as we ended last season winning 16 games in a row, so my thought process was to see how our players deal with adversity and less possession, as trying to win back-to-back league titles will be extremely difficult.

“Not everything will go our way, as indeed was the case last season, although having said that we have character in abundance within this squad and talent to go along with it so I’m quietly confident we can kick on from our recent success.”

Williams added: “We will have a strong squad available for the game against Salford with only Gareth Edwards missing out and I’m looking forward to seeing our new signings grace The Oval turf for the first time, as all four are set to make their debuts.”
