SLICE OF BAD LUCK

Couple say cake ‘ruined’ their wedding day

- Amelia Shaw

A COUPLE say their dream day turned into a nightmare when their wedding cake “caved in on itself”.

Stephen Hughes-Burton said he and bride Lianne were horrified when they cut into the sponge to find it was “undercooked”.

The newlyweds from Nefyn have complained to trading standards about the cake, which they bought from mother and daughter Mair Bailey and Bethan Jones from Trawsfynydd .

Gwynedd council’s public protection department is investigating claims the bakers had been operating without registering with the council.

The couple say they paid £175 for the three-tier sponge and the bakers have since apologised and given them a full refund. But they insist they should be compensated for the inconvenience of having their wedding day spoilt.

Mr Hughes-Burton said: “I picked the cake up the day before the wedding on June 24 and took it to the venue and put it in the cellar. On the wedding day I discovered it had started to tilt to one side and was cracking around the edges.”

He said the cake stayed standing long enough for them to have pictures taken with it, but when they cut in to it they were “appalled” to discover it was “undercooked”. He added: “We were really disappointed – we weren’t even able to eat our wedding cake.”

Ms Bailey said she and her daughter were unaware of any issues at the time the cake was handed over and they only bake “as a hobby”. She added: “We are very sorry about what has happened to Mr and Mrs Hughes-Burton. They have received an apology and a refund.

“We received a message off Mr Hughes-Burton saying if we did not refund him he would take it further. We asked him to bring the cake to us so we could see for ourselves what the problem was. He did not come back to us on that.

“We feel the problem with the cake sliding was the way it was transported, as the person picking the cake up came alone so the cake had to be put on the front seat of the car with no supervision for the hour long drive back to Nefyn.

“We do appreciate that Mr and Mrs Hughes-Burton would have been disappointed as it was a special day. We also acknowledge that some of the cake was undercooked but it’s really hard to tell without actually slicing the cake up.”

A council spokesperson said: “The public protection service is investigating an allegation that a food business in the Trawsfynydd area is operating without registering with Gwynedd council. If the allegation is found to be correct we will take appropriate action to ensure the business complies with the law.”
