Cofis caned by TNS

-

CAERNARFON Town have boosted their squad with the signing of goalkeeper Mike Jones from Cefn Druids.

The 23-year-old joins the Cofis having starred for Prestatyn Town in the Huws Gray Alliance last season.

Canaries manager Iwan Williams said: “Mike is a highly-rated goalkeeper who played the majority of last season at Prestatyn before joining Druids in the summer to try his hand in the Welsh Premier League.

“Unfortunately Mike hasn’t settled at The Rock and when made available I jumped at the chance to bring him to Caernarfon as I have been tracking him for a couple of years.

“He’s your typical sweeper keeper with fantastic technique. He’s passionate, a good communicator, and commands the box very well.

“He’s the type of character the Cofi Army will take to. Mike comes in with a wealth of Cymru Alliance experience and under the guidance of Mike Innes, I’m sure he can become a success at Caernarfon for years to come.”

Caernarfon have also welcomed striker Cory Williams back to the club.

The 20-year-old enjoyed a brief spell with the Cofis during the 2014/15 season and has recently played for Rhyl and Colwyn Bay.

Town host Welsh Alliance club Llanrwst United tonight (Wednesday, 7.30pm) and then this Saturday entertain Welsh Premier League side and recent Europa League success story Gap Connah’s Quay at The Oval.

Caernarfon’s testing pre-season continued last Friday when they hosted record 10-times WPL champions The New Saints.

Having lost 5-0 at home to another very strong top-flight outfit in Bala Town six days earlier, the scoreline was the same against a sharp TNS.

Saints showed why they are Welsh champions in a comfortable victory.

Town’s Nathan Craig tested Saints keeper Paul Harrison with an early strike before Canaries defender Gareth Edwards cleared off his own line after Adrian Cieslewicz had managed to get the ball past guest custodian Alex Lynch.

However, former Wrexham winger Cieslewicz did break the deadlock on 17 minutes through a deflected effort.

Town keeper Lynch made two excellent saves to keep his side in touching distance at half time.

Saints boss Craig Harrison refreshed his side for the second period with a number of changes and the fresh legs certainly had an impact as Greg Draper, Steve Saunders and a Gareth Edwards own goal saw them surge into a 4-0 lead.

Danny Brookwell, Jamie Breese and Darren Thomas all went close to pulling a goal back before Draper added a fifth for the visitors.

In midweek, Caernarfon defeated neighbours Llanberis 6-2 at The Oval, Jamie Breese scoring a hat-trick, Danny Brookwell, Cory Williams and Corrig McGonigle a goal each. Guto Llywelyn and Jonny Cyster responded for the Darans, whose keeper Louis Williams was outstanding.
