Cake makers pass inspection
WEDDING cake makers who were accused by “angry” newlyweds of flouting health and safety laws have passed their inspection.
Mair Daly and Bethan Jones from Trawsfynydd were reported to Gwynedd council last month after a couple were dissatisfied with the three-tier sponge they received from the mother and daughter bakers.
Stephen Hughes-Burton from Nefyn in Gwynedd said he and his new wife Lianne were horrified when they cut into its sponge on their big day in June to find it was “undercooked”.
They were also disappointed that the cake had begun to tilt to one side and the icing was “cracking”.
Despite being refunded their £175, Mr and Mrs Hughes-Burton reported the bakers to the council after becoming concerned that they did not have the relevant health and safety documents.
The case was then passed on to the Public Protection Department of Gwynedd Council and an inspection was carried out.
A Gwynedd Council spokesperson said: “Officers from the Council’s Public Protection department have visited the premises and a full inspection hass been carried out.
“We are pleased to report that the business in question complied withh food safety requirementss at the time of inspection.” spection.”
The bakers have apologised and given the couple a full refund, although the newlyweds insisted at the time that they should be compensated for the inconvenience.
Mrs Daly said: “Bethan and I just want to thank everyone for their support during this time, everyone’s been really nice. “We’re really pleased that we’ve passed the inspection and have decided to carry on making cakes. “After the outcome of the inspection I hope this will be the ende do of it to now.” Mrs Da Daly and Mrs Jones said last m month that they were totallytota unaware of any issuesiss at the time the cake wasw handed over as they onlyon bake “as a hobby”. They claimed that the tiltingtil of the cake was downdo to being transportedtran on the passengerpasse seat of a car for over an h hour from TrawnsfynyddTrawnsfynyd to Nefyn, but acknowledged that some of the cake was undercooked. They also claimed that they gave Mr Hughes-Burton the opportunity to return the cake, but he “didn’t respond.” Mr and Mrs Hughes-Burton declined to comment.
