Cofis triumph at Asaph

-

CAERNARFON Cricket Club travel to Abergele in the North Wales League 2nd XI West Division this Saturday boosted by last weekend’s win at St Asaph.

The five-wicket success at Elwy Park Grove keeps the Cofis in third place in their debut season in the league.

Caernarfon won the toss and decided to bat, posting 126 all out in 29 overs.

Number seven bat Prysor Aled did best with an innings of 39, while skipper Barry Roberts added 20.

Ivor Lloyd took 3-22 and David Hall 3-54 for the Saints.

Iwan Roberts then became Caernarfon’s star bowler with 4-9 off 4.3 overs as Asaph, who only had nine players, were limited to 78-8.

Jonathan Peris-Jones also bowled well, picking up 2-16 from seven.

The points went 12-3 in Caernarfon’s favour. ● Pwllheli are now 10 points adrift at the Premier Division basement following a disastrous 15-0 home loss to Llanrwst last Saturday.

The Rwsters won the toss and elected to bat, chalking up 173-9 off their 50 overs.

It was a decent bowling effort from Pwllheli, especially when they had the visitors in bother on 72-6, but then the match turned on a seventh-wicket stand of 95 between David Taylor (47) and Amlyn Layton (35).

Pwll were left to ponder on what might have been, skipper Morgan Murray-Williams producing their best bowling stats of 4-37 off 11 overs.

Sean Reilly scooped 2-20 and Greg Munro 2-33, and the hosts knew a winning target of 174 was well within their capability.

However, the Pwllheli innings was a disaster.

Reduced to 21-4 in no time, with Layton and Alwyn Williams wreaking havoc, the Llŷn men were eventually all out for 72 in just 22.4 overs.

Michael Hughes (19), Craig Edwards and Sean Reilly (both 16) were the only batsmen to make double figures, with run machine Munro only managing a single.

Layton snared 5-27, Robert Ballarino 2-16 and Williams 2-20 for the triumphant Rwsters.

Pwllheli are running out of chances to save their skins and will need something special this Saturday when they journey to the Vale of Clwyd to tackle a Denbigh team in good form, currently occupying fifth spot in the table.

The bottom side can take heart from their last meeting with Denbigh in May, however, where Pwll won by eight runs in a match in which they scored 309 compared to the opposition’s 301, with Munro hitting 130.

Pwllheli seconds are home to Bangor seconds on Sunday, start time 1.30pm.
