JET SKI DANGER

Close calls on beach:

- Amelia Shaw

JET skiers riding their high-powered vehicles just feet from the heads of swimming parents and children are “putting lives at risk”.

Locals in Abersoch say their behaviour is an “accident waiting to happen”, with the thrill-seekers seemingly oblivious to clear marker buoys in the water.

Numerous such incidents have prompted an online petition calling for more resources to assist the beach wardens to keep people safe.

The petition, started by Catrin Rosewarne from Pwllheli, is calling for a jet ski or a rigid inflatable patrol craft for the beach wardens to be able to control those who break the rules.

Ms Rosewarne said: “This is a problem as there are a lot of different water users here in the bay, ranging from power boats and jet skis to swimmers.

“Due to the popularity of the area some inconsiderate individuals on the water do not abide by the code of conduct and put others at risk.

“This is not helped by the fact that there is no water coverage by the local authority which allows these individuals to take advantage of the situation.”

She added: “Something needs to be done prior to an accident rather than waiting and then saying that patrol would have been beneficial.”

Suggestions have been made for wardens to give out fines to those who don’t follow the rules, with some suggesting that jet skis should be banned entirely.

One woman said: “I know of someone who was decapitated in similar circumstances. Swimming areas should be cordoned off, it’s crazy. It’s an accident waiting to happen.”

● More than 390 people have already signed the petition in the hope that something will be done to prevent a serious injury. To sign it visit www.change.org/p/maritime-unit-gwynedd-council-safewaters-at-abersoch-beach
