Catch the dance and movement bug

- Eryl Crump

FOLLOWING performances at a number of summer festivals in the last few weeks the awardwinning National Dance Company Wales will bring its autumn tour entitled Folk to Bangor later this week.

Created by National Dance Company Wales’ Artistic Director Caroline Finn, headline piece Folk features darkly comic expressions of life and people, using Finn’s quirky choreographic style.

Ms Finn said the piece explores themes of social dynamics and characters in familiar and surreal scenes.

Performed alongside Folk is They Seek to Find the Happiness They Seem by NDC Wales’ Rehearsal Director Lee Johnston.

This is a heart wrenching exploration of the separation and discon- nection within a relationship, a touching duet set to music by Max Richter.

The third dance in the programme is Tuplet. Created by Alexander Ekman, Tuplet is a witty and high octane exploration of the simple notion of rhythm.

Ekman is well known for his fast paced timing and humour, creating work that anyone can relate to and connect with.

Caroline Finn said: “I am incredibly excited to be bringing back three such well received works which feel very close to the company’s heart and to be sharing these with existing as well as new audiences.”

In addition to the performance this Friday, September 16, at 7.30pm, NDC Wales will be leading a bilingual Family Interactive Matinee this Saturday afternoon at 1pm in partnership with Dawns i Bawb, where families can take part in activities with the dancers on stage and watch a performance of Tuplet.

The company dancers also visit schools, community groups and local dance groups prior to the performances, creating opportunities for people to take part and get dancing, and inspiring future generations of dancers.

NDC Wales Chief Executive Paul Kaynes added: “This new element to our programme has been really successful and has meant that some people have engaged with the company for the first time.

“They now have the dance and movement bug and see the benefits and enjoyments that dance can bring into people’s lives.”
