Pwllheli hit 100 to defeat Cobra
CHAMPIONS Pwllheli rattled up a century of points in last weekend’s hammering of visitors Cobra.
The Division One North title holders won 100-0 to maintain their blistering start to the campaign.
After six minutes the pace of Pwll’s left wing Arwel Thomas took him outside the despairing Cobra cover to touch down, Nick Butterworth converting.
Captain Butterworth capitalised on a dropped-off tackle to crash over, then on 13 minutes Thomas beat the cover for his second try.
Cobra had no answer to Pwll’s powerful and speedy backs and soon New Zealander Kalim Kelemete crashed through several wouldbe tacklers for the bonus-point try.
Butterworth added the extras and then improved a John Pugh try, which followed a well-taken interception.
Pugh grabbed a sixth home try and after the home pack did well to turn over possession in a ruck, No8 Tom Parry picked up the loose ball and sprinted 50 metres to score.
On the stroke of half time Pugh completed his hat-trick, making it 46-0 at the interval.
Pwllheli made a raft of substitutions at half time but the changes did not lessen the pressure on the visitors.
Right wing Mathew Butterworth touched down following a sweeping passing movement and brother Nick boosted with the boot.
Cobra held firm for 10 minutes before the floodgates opened again.
Centre Deio Brunelli and No8 Parry added tries 10 and 11, Butterworth converting both.
Sub Robin Hughes-Jones added a brace before wing Thomas brought up his hat-trick, Butterworth adding three more sets of extras for 88-0.
Kelemete chalked up his team’s 15th try and converted his own score.
Before the end, Hughes-Jones scored his third try to take Pwll to 100 points.
Tries: Thomas 3, Pugh 3, Hughes-Jones 3, Parry 2, Kelemete 2, Brunelli, M Butterworth, N Butterworth. Conversions: N Butterworth 9, Kelemete.
This Saturday Pwll aim for a fourth straight win when they visit Colwyn Bay.
Pwllheli’s Youths were well beaten 34-5 by an organised and effective Nant Conwy team.
Pwllheli pressed for long periods but Nant’s defence was outstanding.
