Parts of castle closed after woman and baby in fall

-

LARGE parts of Caernarfon Castle were shut for days after a woman with a baby slipped and fell.

The towers, castle walls and spiral stone staircases were all closed to the public after the mother took a fall while carrying her child up some steps on the morning of Friday, October 28.

The castle grounds remained open.

A spokesperson for Cadw, who runs the site, said it is currently investigating the incident, which is thought to have occurred after a downpour of rain.

A witness to the incident, Penny Weaver, who was visiting from Dorset, said: “My husband and our youngest son visited Caernarfon Castle over the weekend.

“A lady who was carrying a baby fell down quite a few steps inside the castle.

“She was there with her husband and another daughter. I helped her and the baby, as both had banged their heads, and she was very shaken and had a badly injured leg.

“We were all very shaken by the event. Both myself and my son who saw the fall were frightened and quite worried about them.

“We honestly have thought about them a lot since then.”

An ambulance was called but the extent of the injuries to the woman and baby are unknown.

Cadw said it carried out a full review in the wake of the acci- dent and have confirmed that the castle was fully reopened on Monday.

While it is rare for the castle towers to be closed to the public, they have been shut before for weather-related reasons.

Thousands of visitors have flocked to the site over the last few weeks to see the Weeping Window poppy display in honour of the 886,000 British and Colonial deaths on the frontline during World War I.

Cadw estimate more than 5,000 people have visited the exhibition since it opened in Caernarfon last month.

The display was previously shown at the Tower of London, has previously been exhibited in the Orkneys, Yorkshire and Liverpool, and is due to visit six other destinations next year.
