Man released without charge after OAP death

- Eryl Crump

A MAN arrested after a pensioner died in the early hours of New Year’s Day has been released without charge.

Detectives said the death of Dafydd Hughes, of Maes Padarn, Llanberis, was no longer being treated as suspicious.

Police officers were alerted to the incident by the ambulance service at 3.04am on Sunday.

Two ambulance crews had been called to the property and treated the 70-year-old man at the scene before taking him to hospital, where he later died.

Later on Sunday morning police said the death of Mr Hughes was being treated as “suspicious pending results of a post-mortem” examination and a 20-year-old man, who has not been named, was arrested and taken into custody to be questioned.

Detective Chief Inspector Brian Kearney said: “This man has fully co- operated with the police throughout our investigation.

“Following extensive enquiries by a team of detectives along with a post mortem completed by a Home Office Pathologist on Sunday, North Wales Police are now satisfied the death of Dafydd Hughes is not suspicious.”

“As a result, the 20-year-old male has been released unconditionally and he is no longer under any investigation.”

A statement issued by North Wales Police said North west Wales senior coroner Dewi Pritchard Jones has been informed of the outcome of the police investigation and he is satisfied the death is due to natural causes. The cause of death has not been revealed.

Det Chief Insp Kearney added: “The family of Dafydd Hughes are being supported by family liaison officers, and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this tragic time.”

Neighbours said police vehicles were parked outside the property, which is near to the village police sta- tion, all day on Sunday.

One told the Daily Post she saw forensic experts examining areas in the garden on Sunday afternoon as part of the investigation.

“There was a lot of coming and going and a police officer was at the gate all day,” a neighbour said.

Mr Hughes was described as “a lovely, lovely man” who enjoyed gardening and sharing home-grown fruit and vegetables with friends and neighbours.
