RGC suffer heavy defeat at Newport

-

RGC suffered their worst result of the season when they crashed 41-17 at Newport on Monday night.

It was only a fourth league loss of the campaign for the Gogs, who now host Pontypridd at Parc Eirias this Saturday to complete the first phase of fixtures in the Principality Premiership.

After this weekend’s matches, the Premiership splits into top and second tier.

Only the sides in the top eight will be able to compete for a place in the top four at the end of the season and battle it out in the play-offs for the Premiership crown.

Despite Monday’s defeat RGC are fifth and guaranteed a top eight finish.

The visitors made a great start, Tom Hughes grounding for a try which Danny Cross boosted with the boot.

The home side produced an almost immediate response, Rhys Jenkins going over for a try which Arwel Robson converted.

RGC’s Huw Worthington shown a yellow card for dissent and soon after Phil John followed him into the sin-bin.

The hosts made ● Tom Hughes their two-man advantage tell when pressure in the scrum led to a Newport penalty try which Robson improved for 14-7.

Back to 15 on 15, the Gogs emerged as more of an attacking force and Cross soon made it 14-10 with a penalty.

Llywarch ap Myrddin then bagged a try for Newport, kicker Robson dissecting the posts to establish an 11-point lead.

RGC were far from discouraged and soon hit back with a converted try.

A nice break by Josh Leach put Hughes clear to score his second touchdown, Cross kicking over from under the posts.

However, a Robson penalty made it 24-17 to the Black and Ambers at half time.

There was no scoring until the 24th minute of the second half when a spell of home pressure led to a penalty which Robson fired between the sticks.

Newport then cemented their victory when tries from Daniel Partridge and Daniel Mock, both converted by Matt O’Brien, completed a comprehensive success for the home side.
