Lord Snowdon laid to rest at beauty spot he loved

- Eryl Crump

LORD Snowdon has been laid to rest in a secluded spot he loved overlooking the Menai Strait.

Mourners gathered at St Baglan’s Church in Llanfaglan, near Caernarfon, for a small, private service to remember the celebrated photographer and former husband of Princess Margaret.

After a 30-minute memorial Lord Snowdon was placed in the family plot in the churchyard.

The Grade 1 listed building dates from the 13th century and stands in an isolated position with no direct road access. Family and friends walked some 150 yards across the field to the church as a single bell tolled.

One of the mourners said: “We, as a family, are shattered and dreadfully upset at his death and we are grateful for all the support and sensitivity shown to us.”

Another added: “Tony loved visiting here. The Foryd was one of the places he loved to walk along from the castle towards the family home.”

Antony Armstrong-Jones, the 1st Earl of Snowdon, died aged 86 at his home in London on January 13.

He was brought to the church in a dark green Land Rover 4x4 adorned with a large wreath on its roof. The vehicle had been driven slowly past Caernarfon Castle where Lord Snowdon played a key role in the investiture of Prince Charles as Prince of Wales in 1969.

Although born in London he was proud of his Welsh ancestry.

The son of eminent London barrister Ronald ArmstrongJones, the family home was at Plas Dinas, Bontnewydd, near Caernarfon.

Now a hotel, it is believed members of the family had stayed there overnight before yesterday’s funeral service.

During their marriage, Lord Snowdon and his princess wife regularly spent weekends in North Wales, and after their divorce he maintained his connections with the area.
