SPECTACLE OF ALL THINGS BURLESQUE AND CABARET

-

THE third North Wales Burlesque and Cabaret festival is set to hit Theatr Colwyn this weekend.

This year the event will be an international affair and features many acts from across the globe, who will be coming together in North Wales to celebrate their art.

Fans of burlesque, or those that are curious, will be treated to performances and workshops over the course of the two day event.

The festival kicks off on Friday with the Seren yn Codi grand final and sees six new performers compete to win a paid slot in next year’s celebration. This will be followed by a live show which featuring acts from around the world.

If you fancy trying your hand at some performance art, several workshops will be held, including clowning, drama, beginners burlesque and clubbercise. There will also be a masterclass with industry expert Sapphire Rox. The highlight of the weekend will be a show which tells the mythology of Lilith through the medium of burlesque.

Speaking of the festival, Kimberley Edmunds, event manager said: “Burlesque by its very nature is a spectacle and we wanted to work with this and develop the drama and story seen in much burlesque and cabaret.”

The organisers are keen to dispel any myths and negative image surounding the art.

Festival co-founder Russell Erwood said: “People still view burlesque as a sleazy, slightly immoral and disreputable form of entertainment and we want to show them that this just isn’t the case.

“You can be a primary school teacher, nurse, politician or even a nun and still go to and enjoy a night of burlesque and cabaret because just like the ballet or musical theatre it is a celebration of performance art.”

“We believe that burlesque and cabaret are a wide genre which contains a number of performance disciplines and we try to showcase as wide a variety of the skills and talents as we can.”

The North Wales Burlesque and Cabaret Festival will be taking place at Theatr Colwyn on January 27 and 28. Tickets can be purchased on the Venue Cymru website.
