Riding in style on St David’s parade
FOUR local schools in Dwyfor have a won a place for children from their school to ride in a horse and cart at this year’s Parêd Dewi Sant Pwllheli that will be held on Saturday, February 25 at 11am.
All participants to arrive at the car park at Swyddfa Ardal Dwyfor, Embankment Road, Pwllheli by 10:30am.
The four lucky schools are: Ysgol Crud y Werin, Aberdaron; Ysgol Pont y Gof, Botwnnog; Ysgol Gynradd Nefyn and Ysgol Gynradd Borthygest.
All schools from Dwyfor who bought a flag with their school’s name on it had the chance to win a ride in the horse and cart in the St David’s day parade.
This year there will be four horses and two carts at the parade. The theme for this year’s parade will be red, white and green.
Anni Llŷn, Wales’ Children’s Poet and her husband Tudur Phillips, who are familiar faces on S4C, will present Oscars “Gwobrau Sêr Dewi Sant” for the best costumes on the day.
Children who will participate in the parade will receive stickers and balloons.
Also, people can bring a red dragon umbrella and children can bring percussion instruments with them and plenty of red dragon banners. At this year’s parade there will be horses and carts, penny-farthing bikes, tractors, Band Trefor, Band Chwythbrennau Pwllheli, Band Gorymdeithio Cambria Band from Mold, Gwilym Bowen Rhys, Mr Urdd and there will be a ‘Stomp Dewi Sant’ singing competition on the Maes with Welsh actor, singer and poet, Dewi Pws and local schools competing for the “Clod y Parêd” cup.
Furthermore, there will be a shop window competition in Pwllheli organised by Hunaniaith on the theme: red, white and green. Windows to be ready by Feb 24. Tapas Llŷn is back this year. The emphasis is on adopting a Welsh name to the dish and using local ingredients when possible.
Tapas Llŷn week will be held between February 20-25 at Caffi’r Nant, Nant Gwrtheyrn; Plas Glyn y Weddw, Llanbedrog; Becws Islyn, Aberdaron; Whitehall, Taro Deg and Glasu in Pwllheli.
Rhys Llewelyn, Chair of Cymdeithas Parêd Dewi Sant Pwllheli added, “One of the committee’s initiatives since 2014 has been to introduce the Welsh language through food of Tapas Llŷn. The emphasis has been on adopting a Welsh name for the tapas (which includes local ingredients) and trying to encourage customers to ask for it in Welsh, and having fun by doing so. Of course, the restaurants are able to explain about the ingredients bilingually.
The Tapas Llŷn week will take place during the half term and will be held this year for the first time at Caffi’r Nant, Nant Gwrtheyrn, where Welsh is taught on the “Penrhyn Cymraeg” (Welsh speaking peninsula), Becws Islyn, Aberdaron and Glasu Pwllheli which is part of the St David’s Day celebrations in Dwyfor”.
Pwllheli Library will be holding a face painting session from 10am on the day of the parade. Also, Neuadd Dwyfor will show the Wales v Scotland rugby game live in hi-definition at 2:25pm on a large screen for £2 each.
