Canaries are back on song

CAERNARFON Town visit Caersws this Saturday no doubt relieved to have returned to winning ways with a 3-2 success over Ruthin Town last weekend.

Having picked up just two points from their previous three matches, the Canaries delivered a badly needed tonic at The Oval.

The Cofis started brightly, Gareth Edwards heading them into a sixthminute lead from Nathan Craig’s pinpoint cross.

It took a last-gasp clearance from Nathan Williams to keep the home lead intact immediately from the restart, but Caernarfon failed to deal with the resulting corner and Jordan MacCarter drilled home the equaliser.

The home side got on top, but found Ruthin goalkeeper Dylan Jones in outstanding form as he denied Jamie Roberts twice, plus Danny Brookwell, Darren Thomas and Jamie Breese in quick succession.

The yellow and greens finally found a way past Jones in the 32nd minute when Craig’s piledriver free-kick flew past the motionless stopper.

Breese and Thomas went close before the break, but the score remained 2-1 until the 58th minute when a long diagonal ball caught Caernarfon’s defence square and MacCarter finished impressively.

The remaining third of the match proved a thriller as both sides pushed for victory, although Caernarfon enjoyed the lion’s share of possession and goalscoring opportunities.

Some Thomas trickery helped create the Canaries’ winner when he glided past two opponents on his way into the box before letting fly with a venomous shot that glovesman Jones failed to hold, and Rob Jones was first to reach the rebound, blasting into the roof of the net.

Ruthin were awarded a penalty after keeper Keighan Jones brought down MacCarter, but he saved from Ian Hughes’ spot-kick.
