Cofis one point from title
Caernarfon close in on title after win over Northop Hall
CAERNARFON Town are within a point of being crowned North Wales Women’s Football League champions following last Sunday’s convincing 4-0 victory over Gap Northop Hall at The Oval.
The Canaries made it 16 wins in 17 matches and boosted their goal difference to a remarkable plus 103, with 112 scored and only nine conceded.
If Bethel fail to win at Northop Hall this Sunday, Caernarfon will lift the title without kicking a ball.
Sunday’s game against the reigning champions started well for Caernarfon with Anna Jones netting in the first two minutes.
By the eighth minute the home team were further ahead thanks to a goal by captain Ffion Owen.
The game settled with Northop competing better, but a penalty was awarded to Caernarfon on 30 minutes and converted by league top-scorer Catrin Thomas, who made it 35 goals for the season. Many more attempts at goal kept Northop’s keeper busy. Five minutes before the break the visitors had a free kick which was well saved.
The second half began with two new signings coming for the Cofis - 16 year olds Erin Jones and Efa Williams, who was making her debut appearance for Caernarfon.
A rapid goal three minutes into the second half by Anna Jones put Caernarfon into a 4-0 lead. Within minutes again Northop’s keeper was quick to make a save from a strong attempt at goal via Anna Jones.
As the game wore on, Northop picked up the pace and showed resilience in difficult wintry conditions.
Frustration got the better of both teams deep into the second half with members of each side were handed yellow cards.
With a 4-0 final score, Caernarfon were at times lacklustre, and the score tally could have been considerably higher.
Although Northop showed determination and teamwork up until the end, Caernarfon were the better side overall and looked more than worthy of being champions.
