League set to make return

- Sunday football

AFTER just one season out of action, the local Sunday football league is set to be resurrected, with 15-plus teams set to be involved.

Last week’s open revival meeting at the Victoria Hotel, Menai Bridge – convened by former league stalwart Elfed O Jones – was packed with enthusiasts and optimism.

The spread of potential teams to form the North Gwynedd and Anglesey League’s membership is extensive, from Holyhead in the north to Caernarfon in the west and Llandudno in the east.

Appointed the league’s returning chairman, Elfed Jones said: “The meeting was very encouraging and the quite definite outcome is that the league will be restarted, with 15 teams and maybe more involved.

“After the problems of the recent past, I am obviously pleased the league will be up and running again, because there is a call for it among lads who want to play football on Sundays.

“The plan is to kick off in August probably, with one or two divisions, depending on the final numbers.”

New league secretary Nick Williams said: “We have a list of teams interested in joining but, because of various circumstances, including that some teams will be based on pubs, their actual names have yet to be confirmed.

“We are planning to have a follow-up meeting in early April to take the preparations a stage further and the position should be a lot clearer then, especially as regards sponsorship”.

Two other league officers appointed were Gwynfor Parry as treasurer and Richard Williams as referees’ appointments secretary.

Positive interest was identified from five or six teams from Holyhead, two or three from Caernarfon, possibly two from Bethesda, and others based at Amlwch, Bangor, Bodedern, Gwalchmai, Llandudno, Moelfre and Pentraeth.
