Canaries are champs

-

CAERNARFON Town Ladies captain Ffion Owen is thrilled at the prospect of leading her team in the Welsh Premier Women’s League next season.

The Cofis were crowned North Wales League champions without kicking a ball last weekend after Bethel – the only team who could pass Town’s points total – were beaten at Pwllheli.

Caernarfon have applied to return to the WWPL, in which they last featured in 2013/14, and are waiting for news on whether their promotion bid has been accepted.

Skipper Owen said: “It feels amazing to finally win the league with three matches to go.

“We’ve won without playing last Sunday, the pressure has gone and we can now relax and hopefully enjoy the last three matches we’ve got left.

“The girls are really looking forward to celebrating, but we’ve still got important games to play.

“We now need to concentrate on the games we have left and the cup, then the hard work starts ready for the Welsh Premier next season – if our application is accepted.

“We are hopefully going up and are looking forward to the next challenge.

“We’ve worked hard over the last two seasons to get to where we are.

“The team spirit we’ve developed is amazing.”

Caernarfon have been on a different level to everyone else in the 11-team North Wales League this term.

From their 17 matches to date, the Canaries have won 16, scored 112 goals and conceded just nine.

Their only loss was a 1-0 reverse at Airbus.

Top-scorer Catrin Thomas, who rejoined the club in the summer from Llandudno, has netted 35 times in all competitions.

She grabbed seven in one game against Prestatyn and six in a 13-0 triumph at Bangor.

Captain Owen has also enjoyed a tremendous campaign, chalking up 20 goals to date.

In their remaining North Wales Women’s League (NWWL) fixtures, Caernarfon have Llanfair to play at home as well as facing Bethel twice. The NWWL also has cup competitions to play.
