Charity shop bombarded with calls over secret sub plans... including from Russia
A charity shop manager who found secret plans to a nuclear clear submarine tucked away inn a donated suitcase says she has been inundated with calls expressing interest... including from Russia.
Stella Parker said Barnardo’s in Porthmadog had been bombarded with inquiries about the cut-awayay map of the decommissioneded Trafalgar-class boat after the story appeared in the press last week.
Soon after details were published of the 6ft long map, the charity was contacted by people interested in getting their hands on it and international media organisations wanting to know more about how it came into their possession.
But so far there appears to be no interest from the British secret serservicesices – atat leastleast nonenone thatthat MrsMrs Parker knows about.
She said: “The response has been amazing.
“We’ve had calls from newspapers and television companies from around the globe, as well as lots of interest in the UK.
“We’ve had Germans wanting to bid for it, and Russian media were particularly interested.”
She added they have even had several calls from potential buyers, buyers including a former captaincaptain of the sub. SheSh said the map, which was usedus by submariners to orientateo themselves around HMS Trafalgar when it was first brought into service, hadh been declassified after theth sub was decommissioneddec in 2009. ButBu just in case anyone cannotcannot wait to get their hands on them, them, they have been moved to a safesafe locationlo until the auction gets underway from next Monday (March 13).
Mrs Parker said: “The nice thing is that any money we make stays for local projects, so hopefully all this publicity will get us a lot more bidders and I’ve done my job.” ● Visit the Barnardo’s shop on the High Street, Porthmadog, or call 01766 513167 for more information.
