ANOTHER ACCIDENT OUTSIDE SCHOOL

Cllr calls for lollipop crossing

A CHILD has been hit by a bus outside a primary school.

The young girl was taken to Ysbyty Gwynedd, Bangor, after being struck outside Ysgol Yr Hendre, Caernarfon, at 3.45pm last Thursday.

Her injuries are not thought to be lifethreatening, but the accident – the sec- ond similar incident on the site in just over a year – prompted governor Jason Parry to demand the school employs a lollipop lady.

He said: “There’s been a similar accident last year, and that was a warning shot.

“I think accidents like these go to prove how much they’re needed, especially for large schools such as Ysgol yr Hendre which are located on busy roads.

“I hope she makes a full and speedy recovery, but let’s hope this doesn’t happen again and real action is taken by way of having someone here to help the children cross the road safely.”

Police closed the road in both directions after the bus, believed to be an Express Motors vehicle, hit the girl, who is a pupil at the school.

At the time of going to press, Express Motors, based in nearby Penygroes, were unable to confirm whether their bus was involved, but did confirm that one of their vehicles was at the scene at the time of the accident.

In February last year an eight-year-old pupil was hit by a car outside the school. Sam Stuhlfelder was walking home with classmates when he was hit, suffering a broken leg.

An eyewitness who drove past shortly after last week’s incident said it is a “stupid place” to have an entrance for the school, and also called for a lollipop lady to be employed there.
