CYCLISTS SET FOR BIG RIDE

A GROUP of cyclists are training to undertake a marathon bike ride around North Wales.
Twenty members of Caernarfonbased Clwb Beicio Menai will take three days to complete the 280 mile ride to raise money for Awyr Las, the NHS charity in North Wales and the Wales Air Ambulance.
Hospital worker Dez Jones from Nefyn said he wants to see as much money raised as possible for the Childrens Ward at Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor.
The ride starts from the Maes in Caernarfon at 9am on June 2.
“The first day we’ll travel along the coast via the cycle track and back roads to near Chester before turning south to Wrexham and onto our first night stop over at Llangollen.
“The distance is about 100 miles and it’s mainly flattish.
“The next day we’ll go via the back lanes to Corwen and then south via Cynwyd to Bala. Keep heading south and over Bwlch y Groes to Dinas Mawddwy and onto Corris and Aberdyfi. We then turn North up to the Barmouth area.
“It’s a hillier route over 96 miles,” he said.
After leaving Barmouth on Sunday the group will head to Porthmadog and all the way to Aberdaron and then return home to Caernarfon.
Club member Rob Taylor said: “We’re covering 280 miles and a total ascent of 25,000 feet so it’s a big task. There are 20 riders in total and we’re hoping to raise quite a bit of money for a local cause which is great news.
“We’re going to do a lap of the Llŷn peninsula which is certainly not flat, it’s quite a hilly route. The interesting thing is that we’re not that young.
“If anyone is out there on the route look out for us and give some support. All donations are gratefully received, it’s all for charity.”
