Thousands stolen in railway office raid

-

THIEVES smashed their way into a railway’s office and made off with thousands of pounds.

The break-in at Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railway’s premises on St Helen’s Road, Caernarfon, was discovered by devastated staff at 9am yesterday.

It is thought the raiders broke a rear window sometime overnight to gain access to the temporary office, which is being used while a new £2.5m station is built.

The railway’s general manager, Paul Lewin, told the Daily Post the office was “ransacked” by the yobs.

He said: “There was a break-in overnight and several thousands of pounds were taken.

“The place was absolutely ran- sacked – they made a right mess of the place. We do have some really clear and strong CCTV images of the offender.”

Following the burglary, security is being stepped-up and no cash will be left on site overnight from now on.

Mr Lewin added: “We had more money in the office than usual because of the bank holiday but after this we’ll not be keeping any cash on site overnight.

“The worst thing has been the mess left. It’s the cost of putting things right and replacing windows that is the most damaging. It’s just really upsetting.”

North Wales Police are investigating and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
