Back to school after storm Barbara chaos

AS part of Gwynedd Council’s strategic project “Yma Mae Pethau’n Digwydd” to attract investment from major events in the county, a workshop is planned specifically for Gwynedd event organisers, local businesses and communities who are interested in getting involved with major events.

As part of the Gwynedd Business Week, a free seminar will be held in the Town Hall in Portmeirion on Wednesday, May 24 at 6pm. The evening will be led by Iwan Trefor Jones, Gwynedd Council’s Strategic Director who will be in discussion with Festival No6, Snowdonia Outdoor Festival, Red Bull, Always Aim High Events and a local business that has benefited from events.

Steve Lane the Managing Director of Brand Events TM who are staging the inaugural ‘Snowdonia Outdoor Festival’ in Bala this year said that they: “Always look to use suppliers from local communities where their events are held as events should not only provide entertainment for visitors but also a tangible benefit to the economy in which they are located. This type of seminar is an excellent opportunity to meet event organisers and share information with people and local suppliers.”

Iwan Trefor Jones, Gwynedd Council’s Strategic Director added: “We are delighted to offer this opportunity for indigenous businesses in the area. It is estimated that Gwynedd’s major events contributed over £6 million to the economy of Gwynedd in 2016. There is already significant expenditure within Gwynedd as a result of the events held here but there is always room for improvement and I would urge any business interested in an opportunity to sell in Gwynedd’s major events to attend this seminar also it’s a great opportunity for indigenous event organisers to hear from major UK and International event organisers about their experiences.”

Mr Carr said that, although the foundation phase classroom was worst hit when the roof was torn off and the floor and ceiling damaged, Gwynedd council has also laid a new floor and built a new ceiling in a second classroom, as well as redecorating and buying new furniture.

“A lot of hard work has been carried out before today, and I would like to thank 4 Crosses Construction, Gwynedd Council, the local community, parents, teachers, staff and governors for their fantastic work,” he said.

Following the storm, the friends of the school raised £6,000 to help repair the damage. Among the donations was £250 which had been given to a couple for their golden wedding anniversary, which left Mr Carr “almost in tears”.

“Unfortunately, it would be difficult to write to everybody to give our thanks,” he said.

Dylan Humphreys, the chair of governors at Ysgol Rhosgadfan, has two children at the school.

He said: “It was a pleasure to see the pupils back at their ‘home’ after a challenging and stressful few months. They were really happy to be back.

“We must thank Gwynedd Council for going beyond what they had to, including tidying up ill-fitting doors. Everything looks great.

“Some of the old 1900s furniture and desks have now been replaced by new furniture and equipment. We hope to do the same with the one classroom which hasn’t been upgraded.”

An open day will be held between 2pm and 5pm on Saturday for supporters to see the developments at the school.

The Friends of Ysgol Rhosgadfan will organise entertainment and snacks in the school yard as a way of thanking those who contributed to the fund for new tables and chairs.

Another fundraiser for tables and chairs for the school will be held at 7.30pm when Phil Gas and his band will be playing at the Mountain Rangers club. Tickets are £5 and doors open at 7pm.
