Landlord says sorry for job advert gaffe

A pub owner has said he had no intention to sexually discrimina­te in a job advert that was looking specifical­ly for men and women to carry out certain roles.

Daniel Coulton, owner of the Trefnant Inn pub in Trefnant, near Denbigh, recently posted a job advert to the pub’s Facebook page looking for “two young lads” to work in the kitchen and “a new barmaid” to work front of house.

The Equality Act 2010 states that it is “unlawful for an employer to discrimina­te against employees because of their sex.”

Mr Coulton has now insisted that he had no intention of discrimina­ting against men or women with the job advert and feels that it has been “taken the wrong way”.

He said: “This was completely accidental, it was not meant to come across like that at all. We do have waitresses working in our kitchen and equally we do have a barman working front of house.

“Because we already have girls in the back and boys in the front we just wanted to mix the team up a little bit, there’s nothing negative in it.”

Under the Equality Act, employers are required to have policies in place to prevent discrimina­tion in recruitmen­t and selection, determinin­g pay, training and developmen­t, selection for promotion or dismissal and selection for redundancy.

Mr Coulton said that after this confusion he will no longer use the Face- book page to advertise job positions.

He added: “The only reason I use the Facebook page is so that we can reach all the locals who might be looking for work. The job advert was never meant to cause offence and I will remove the post to avoid any further misunderst­andings.”

Mr Coulton has now filled the positions in the job advert.
